A MORE INTIMATE WAY TO EXPERIENCE JAPAN

Miyuki comes from Akita, but we live in Kyoto. One day her mom sent us a SHIOKURI box. When we opened it, it drew such a beautiful smile on Miyuki’s face that I’ll never forget! It was full of things made in Akita that Miyuki loves and misses, so she started telling me stories of things she remembered like how and where they used to enjoy some of the items. I loved it!

Most Japanese older adults don’t show physical affection publicly, so SHIOKURI box is basically a way for parents in Japan to show love and support to their kids once they become adults by sending them boxes with food, drinks, daily-life essentials, and things they used to love before moving far away from home.

Explore local Japan and learn the unseen parts of the culture with our SHIOKURI Box

Through our SHIOKURI box subscription, we hope you too can explore local Japan with us and connect with the culture through its local products and the stories behind it. Let us take care of you, as a Japanese mom would!

“That was the best thing we have ever tried! Thank you.”

We are foodies by heart, so we love hearing those words after recommending our best local food finds and non-touristy places to people visiting Japan. Miyuki and I have lived in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Kyoto. Miyuki was raised in Akita. Our hobby is to explore local places in Japan and discover coffee shops and small restaurants that excel at what they do.

“This is my second time in Japan and I didn’t know that!”

Most of the times we have talked to people who have been in Japan, they just visited the most touristy places and the ones they found via Instagram influencers, so in most cases they didn’t know many of the things we locals love eating, drinking, or doing.
We feel that there is a big language and cultural barrier causing most tourists to barely grasp the surface of what Japan truly has to offer, so we decided to start Ask Japan Locals for everyone abroad to also enjoy what mostly locals can now enjoy!
