Explore Kyoto like a local: Kitano Tenmangu, Geisha District

What we’ll do?

Join me for a laid-back day in Kyoto that feels less like a tour and more like hanging out with a friend who knows the place inside out. We’ll start at Kitano Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to the god of learning that’s been around since 947. It’s got this quiet, timeless energy—think ancient monuments, stone paths, and seasonal flowers that draw visitors from all over Japan.

At the shrine, I’ll walk you through basic etiquette and introduce you to the “Mizuura Mikuji,” a unique water-based fortune-telling ritual you can try if you’re up for it. We’ll take some photos too, with the shrine’s old-school architecture or blooming flowers as your backdrop. Nothing forced, just natural shots of you enjoying the moment that you’ll actually want to keep.

Next, we'll head to Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest geisha district. It’s got a special charm, and I’ll take you to a local sweets spot most tourists never find. We’ll sit down with some fresh mochi (quite different from the kind you might know) and a cup of tea. It’s a perfect place to chat about Kyoto’s stories and unwind.

Having lived here, I’ll share its history, quirks, and flavors in a way that feels personal. By the end, you’ll have tasted something authentic, seen corners most miss, and walked away with a few good pictures and a real feel for Kyoto.

    About your hosts

Hi! We are Jesus and Miyuki!

We are foodies by heart, so we love hearing those words after recommending our best local food finds and non-touristy places to people visiting Japan.
Miyuki and I have lived in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Kyoto. Miyuki was raised in Akita. Our hobby is to explore local places in Japan and discover coffee shops and small restaurants that excel at what they do.
