In Japanese, quite a few words are used exactly as they are in English, but the pronunciation can be completely different (we sometimes call this “Japanglish”). For example, the way to say “credit card” in Japanese is the same as in English, but the pronunciation is quite different.

At a Restaurant
🇯🇵 Menyu o kudasai
EN: Can I please have the menu?
ES: Podría ver el menú por favor?
🇯🇵 Sumimasen
EN: You say this when you want to order something.
ES: Dices esto cuando quieres pedir algo.
🇯🇵 Osusume wa arimasuka?
EN: You say this to ask for the store’s recommended food, drink, dessert, etc. It is very useful when you don’t understand the menu or find it hard to choose.
ES: Dices esto para pedir la recomendación de la tienda sobre comidas, bebidas, postro, u otras cosas. Es una frase muy útil cuando no entiendes el menú o no sabes qué pedir.
🇯🇵 Oniku ga haitteinai menyū wa arimasuka?
EN: Is there something in the menu that has no meat?
ES: ¿Hay algo en el menú que no tenga carne?
🇯🇵 Kore wo kudasai / Onegai shimasu
(Hitotsu: 1, Futatsu: 2, Mitsubishi: 3, Yotsu: 4)
EN: Kore means “this”. You can point at something in the menu and say “kore wo kudasai! Futatsu” (2 of these please!)
ES: Kore significa “esto”. Así que puedes señalar algo en el menú y decir “kore wo kudasai! Futatsu” (¡2 de estos, por favor!)
🇯🇵 Okaikei onegai shimasu
EN: Can I please have the check?
ES: ¿Me trae la cuenta, por favor?
🇯🇵 Kado de haraemasuka?
EN: Do you also accept credit cards?

🇯🇵 Gochisou sama deshita
EN: Thank you for the meal.

EN: Show them your phone’s map and say the above phrase

🇯🇵 Koko de oroshite moraemasuka?
EN: Can you drop me off here?
ES: ¿Puedes dejarme aquí?
🇯🇵 Ikura desu ka?
EN: How much is it?

*Japanese people get happy if you use it!

EN: Japanese slang term. It can mean awesome, terrible, crazy, unbelievable, “oh sh*t!”, wow, etc. Can be used in both negative and positive situations. Extremely useful word!
ES: Expresión coloquial japonesa. Puede significar: impresionante, terrible, loco, increíble, “¡oh, mierda!”, ¡wow!, etc. Puede usarse en situaciones tanto negativas como positivas. ¡Es una palabra extremadamente útil!
